Reasonable Suspicion Training for DOT and non-DOT Companies

DOT-regulated companies are required to have Supervisor Reasonable Suspicion Training records on file.

Non-DOT companies are advised to train supervisors too.

Reasonable Suspicion Training

Every organization should have supervisors who are able to appropriately and effectively identify substance abuse on the job. Employee drug and alcohol testing cannot be performed based on a mere hunch. Reasonable Suspicion Training delivers the necessary tools and skills to recognize and appropriately handle employees exhibiting signs of substance abuse. This program will prepare supervisors for determining whether or not reasonable suspicion exists and what to do when they suspect it.

At the end of the program, supervisors should understand:

  • The different components of the Drug-Free Workplace Policy
  • Their role in implementing the Drug-Free Workplace Policy

Every employer has an obligation to provide a safe and secure workplace.

If supervisors are not trained to effectively and responsibly deal with substance abuse, the employer may be liable.

At the end of the training, supervisors should know how to:

  • Identify and investigate crisis situations
  • Recognize workplace problems that may be related to alcohol and other drugs
  • Intervene in problem situations
  • Refer employees who have problems with alcohol and other drugs
  • Protect employee confidentiality
  • Continue to supervise employees who have been referred to assistance
  • Avoid enabling and common supervisor traps
